The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.
The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.
Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.
"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not only his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.
The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.
Contingency Plans
If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."
"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.
"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
